Sometimes we have to move alone, you may be living in a new country, or all your friends are busy and affording a moving company is out of the question. As with any move, there will be some bigger, heavier items. We have some tips to help you move heavy furniture alone and to do it safely.
This is time to be completely honest with yourself. If you think that there is no way that you can move that bed, desk, table etc alone, it might be time to bite the bullet and get help. There is no point in risking injury to yourself or your expensive furniture. It may be costly, but it’s better than an expensive medical bill.
We have all learned these lifting techniques at one point, but here is a refresher:
Before you begin moving the heavy stuff, walk the route you will be using and make sure everything is out of the way. Put padding on the doors, get rid of carpets you could trip on etc. Then go and wrap up the furniture you are moving, this will help prevent dings and dents. Your local moving supply store will have special protective blankets and wraps made for moving.
If you can remove parts of your heavy furniture first, do so. This will make the move safer and easier for you. If you can, take the whole item apart and transport the pieces. Make sure to keep all the screws and pieces together, sandwich bags help with this.
